Texas Tidbits

Ever driven through a place and wondered how in the heck you pronounce it? Texas has quite a few towns within its 254 counties that are frequently mispronounced. We've provided just a few examples, with the correct pronunciation for your convenience.

Boerne (BUR-knee)—the county seat of Kendall County, this little town in the Hill Country is just northwest of San Antonio and has become a haven for antiques shoppers.

Hico (HIGH-co)—this small town in Hamilton County is the home of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Leakey (LAY-key)—this community is the county seat of Real County and located near Lost Maples State Natural Area (famous for its bigtooth maples that begin to change colors in late October).

Mexia (meh-HEY-uh)—located in Limestone County, this hamlet is best known for its most famous daughter: Anna Nicole Smith.

Palestine (PAL-us-steen)—the Anderson County seat sits in East Texas and is northwest of Davy Crockett National Forest.

Refugio (Re-FURy-o)—this South Texas town is the county seat of Refugio County, which is the home of the whooping crane.
