Night Galleries

It was more than a decade ago that merchants and members of the San Antonio Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization Program for the area called Southtown—which encompasses the King William Historic District, the Blue Star Arts Complex, and the 1800's Lavaca neighborhood—proposed that galleries in the area open their doors to the public the first Friday evening of every month. And the enthusiastic masses arrived like clockwork. But over the years, people were just as likely to see rock bands performing and men dressed in drag as they were abstract expressionist paintings and video installations. You can see for yourself on May 7. Enjoy a beer or a glass of wine and then stroll along South Alamo, from Durango to the Blue Star Arts Complex. And, yes, even though the occasional bongo circle convenes, the night still tops many locals' list of things to do. If that isn't the ultimate test, we don't know what is. (See San Antonio Events)
