Gary Cartwright

“When [founder and publisher] Mike Levy first came to me with the idea of creating a Texas magazine,” reminisces senior editor Gary Cartwright, “I thought it was the dumbest thing I’d ever heard.” Cartwright must have changed his mind, because thirty-three years later, he’s still writing for TEXAS MONTHLY. Two of his stories appear in this issue: “The Thrill of the Hunt”, about his improbable friendship with a staunch conservative, and “Dan Rather Retorting”, his account of the career of the CBS News anchorman, who granted him extraordinary access. “I got to spend several hours with him,” says Cartwright. “We’re roughly the same age and our careers are parallel, so this story was perfect for me in a way. And Rather couldn’t have been more gracious.”
