From What Gives?

out of an aluminum can we smoked
in the serenest of cemetaries
we shared thoughts and laughs
and it was all twinkling.
rain splattered the windshield
of the warm car that enveloped us
in smoke
in warmth
in tittering giggles.
and i remember looking down at my legs.
there were — GOSH — there were so many holes in my tights
that i had never never noticed before!!

as a kite
my eyeballs shrunk
and my mouth went dry
as anna drove us back to school
the trees were ten
thousand
times more beautiful
and i noticed every detail.
the outlines of the houses jumped
and then slowly the insides followed
when i turned my head
to look around.
i looked to anna.
she was
sooooooo
funny she
was
sooooooo
great
god.
i loved her.
i loved her so much.
upon realizing this
i melted into my seat
and closed my shrinking eyes.
my bones were so warm.
