“This was taken in California while I was on assignment for Stern, the German magazine,” Winters says. “Tom had just released two albums, and he had rented a hotel suite for the press. Ours was the last photo shoot of the day, and I found out that he and I were both reading Nick Tosches’s Where Dead Voices Gather. It was a great, mellow shoot.”
