We can reaffirm this legacy with a vision to make lives better as the home for the top universities, health care, and research in the world. Texas is uniquely positioned in the current economic and cultural climate to become the pioneer in creating new knowledge—the place where innovation and discovery happen first. It’s not impossible or even improbable for the world to see Texas as the best place for education and research that make lives better.

Cigarroa is the chancellor of the University of Texas System. He lives in Austin.
