TEXAS MONTHLY Receives National Magazine Award for General Excellence

The magazine has received 18 nominations over the past ten years and 54 nominations in all.

Austin, Texas—April 30, 2009—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and Columbia University announced that TEXAS MONTHLY has won a National Magazine Award in the category of General Excellence. This is the tenth National Magazine Award for the magazine, which, over its 36-year history, has been nominated 54 times, 18 nominations over the past ten years.

The General Excellence Award recognizes the effectiveness with which writing, reporting, editing, design and photography work together to command readers’ attention and fulfill the magazine’s unique editorial mission. For this category, TEXAS MONTHLY submitted the May, November, and December 2008 issues. Other magazines nominated in the General Excellence category were the Atlantic, Backpacker, New York, and W. TEXAS MONTHLY has been nominated for General Excellence eight of the past ten years.

Upon learning of the award, TEXAS MONTHLY president and editor in chief Evan Smith said, “Even in bad economic times—maybe especially in bad economic times—the work we do matters. So I’m thrilled to see the efforts of our editors and writers and designers validated by our peers. We’re honored and gratified to win this special recognition.”

The National Magazine Awards, established in 1966 by ASME, are administered by the Graduate School of Journalism of Columbia University and sponsored by ASME. The awards are widely considered to be the magazine industry’s most prestigious recognition, equivalent to the newspaper industry’s Pulitzer Prize.

Founded in 1973 by Michael R. Levy, TEXAS MONTHLY has a circulation of 300,000 and is read by more than 2.5 million people each month—one out of every eight Texas adults. TEXAS MONTHLY is published by Emmis Publishing, L.P.  Emmis owns and operates radio stations and other regional magazines.
