TEXAS MONTHLY SAYS: 2006: If the Clint Eastwood fan club ever needs a meeting place, Pappy’s is it (the posters on the wall go back to Clint’s days on “Rawhide”). The grub is a range of buffet-style offerings: sliced brisket (tender and juicy), chicken, sausage, and don’t-miss chopped pork kicked up with red pepper. The vegetable options are as much Old South as Old West, with fried okra and bacon-spiked green beans riding alongside cornbread.
2008: The mesquite-smoked brisket was well seasoned and tender, and the sliced German sausage was slightly sweet and spicy. But the real winners at this rustic locale, decorated with vintage posters for old cowboy flicks, were the sides. Green beans sprinkled with garlic, onion, and bacon and not-too-chunky potato salad were a perfect reward for a long day of driving. Opt for a square of cornbread instead of a slice of white bread.
BBQ SNOB SAYS: 2010: Guest Contributor—CKey writes this review of Pappy’s Bar B-Q in Monahans, which made TEXAS MONTHLY’s Top 50 in 2008.
We pulled into an empty parking lot one evening and walked into an empty dining room. No guests, no staff. Had we entered the twilight zone? Slowly the staff began to filter out of the back and we started placing our orders—brisket, sausage, ribs, and all the sides. The brisket was tender and moist with an excellent smoky flavor; there was no need for the sauce on the side, but if you are so inclined to try some, it only enhances your experience. My sausage was just as good. One of my companions was speechless while eating his ribs, but once he finished, there was no stopping his joy.
