SBOE adopts science standards; was the fix in?

When the Texas Freedom Network puts out an approving statement about an action taken by the State Board of Education, you know something strange is going on.

Here was the TFN statement:

“Today we saw Texas kids and sound science finally win a vote on the State Board of Education. Now our public schools can focus on teaching their students fact-based science that will prepare them for college and a 21st-century economy. And our schoolchildren won’t be held hostage to bad decisions made by a politicized board that adopted flawed science curriculum standards two years ago. Moreover, today we saw that the far right’s stranglehold over the state board is finally loosening after last year’s elections. That’s very good news for public education in Texas.”

Now, I hate to be accused of being a cynic, but…do you suppose the far right members on the board had a sudden conversion experience that led them to abandon their strident positions of yesteryear? Or is it possible that, with the entire political world focused on Rick Perry, a call went out to SBOE chair Barbara Carghill suggesting that she round up the votes to adopt the education commissioner’s list of recommended science materials and adjourn the meeting ASAP before somebody says something about creationism?

Perry playing politics with the SBOE? Making himself look good at the expense of school children? Fix in? Oh, Paul, please. Not from a dyed in the wool Texas Christian!

I’m betting Rick Perry had very little to do with this one. The GOP candidates in at least two of the seats are not conservatives. Anyone could have done this math the day after the election. This is just the result of an uninformed electorate pulling the straight party level at the voting booth.

More reason then ever to get rid of the straight-party option on the ballots.

It is correct that the “true Christian conservative” faction no longer has the votes on the SBOE. But Perry is a very astute politician, and he is too smart to let the debate over science standards devolve into a fight over evolution that would make national headlines.

You libs are hilarious! An entire week of news “stories” speculating on what would happen. Then, it doesn’t happen that way and you think “the fix is in!” Simply hilarious. You’ve all so misconstrued what has been argued on the SBOE that you don’t know truth from fiction.

Teach science in science classes. Teach the history of religions in history, social studies, and sociology, classes. Teach religion itself in the home and at church. Teach whatever you think is appropriate in home school or a Christian religious school. Public schools should not be a place to proselytize for any particular version of Christianity or any other religion.

You’re responses make so little since I can only conclude that you really need an english to moron translator to be able to follow what other people are saying on a thread.

    JohnBernardBooks Reply:

here’s a translation for you morons: We took God out of public schools and the pedophiles moved in. When did catholics take God out of their schools and parishes?
So why would anyone bring up priests except from sheer stupidity.

    Anonymous Reply:

Have you been under a rock the last 10 years??? Have you not heard of the catholic priest pedophile scandal that has rocked the church and cost it 100′s of millions in settlements?? So, moron, the question to you is: When did the catholic church take GOD out of it’s schools??? Don’t forget to show your work. Asswipe!

    JohnBernardBooks Reply:

so tell me again when we took God out of the catholic schools?
You pedophiles pose as priets all the time. That is what it is a pedophile posing as a priest. You may be too ignorant to get that.

    JohnBernardBooks Reply:

hint for liberals the public schools and the catholic private schools/church are NOT the same.
How dumb do you have to be for someone to have to explain that to you?
I bring up the SCOTUS rulings and you bring up the catholic church?
No one you idiots voted for Obama!

    Anonymous Reply:

So taking god out of public schools led to an undocumented, unproven, except in your head, epidemic of pedophiles in the school system. But,amazingly, the one place where there was an epidemic of pedophiles, private catholic schools and catholic parishes, didn’t take god out. Seeing any conflict in your beliefs and reality there Mr. braindead??? Oh, and claiming that pedophile priest weren’t “real” priests is the lamest crap I’ve ever heard. Not surpised that’s your answer.

    JohnBernardBooks Reply:

you just keep proving my point, “who voted for Obama and why?”

    JohnBernardBooks Reply:

Once you show no proof that anyone has taken God out of the catholic chuch or schools. You can say a prayer with God in the catholic church, you can even say a prayer at a catholic school.
All you have in the catholic church is a bunch of pedophiles pretending to be priests.
However you cannot read from the bible in our public schools and liberals courts have ruled in favor of banning prayer at football games, graduations etc. But pedophiles are present.
In public schools no prayers, no bible, but pedophiles are welcome. In the catholic church and schools, prayers to God and reading his word are welcome.
How for you to accept? it might be cause you’re a liberal/progressive/all around dummazz.

    Anonymous Reply:

You can pray or read the bible all you want. You just can’t force anyone else to listen to you. And that’s what pisses off all you “christians”. You don’t care about your religion, you just care about forcing other people to pay homage to your religion. If you are so hot to read the bible, try reading Matthew 6:5, hypocrite.
And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.

“You can pray or read the bible all you want”
really? Now you’re just proving you’re stupid.
When I said we took God out of schools and let the pedophiles in, did that make you angry?
That makes we wonder why do you hate christians so much.
That makes me wonder if you’re a pedophile.

In 2005 SCOTUS ruled that atheism is *equivalent* to religion in terms of being entitled to 1st amendment protections.

They did not rule that it was a religion. That is a fact.

Of course here in the buckle of the bible belt, the Texas constitution contains a clause that prohibits atheists from holding public office.

The Texas Constitution does not prohibit atheists from holding public office. It says an elected official must acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being. An atheist could lie about whether he or she believes in a Supreme Being. That would not be a first. We already have numerous elected officials on both sides of the political fence who are perfectly comfortable with coloring the truth.

Your solution may seem far-fetched, but something made those nuts on the Board back down from their craziness, and your guess is as good as any. He has also backed down on gay marriage. Maybe he promised them that he’d make things right for them if he is elected president.
