Perry blames poor debate performance on health issues

From the Daily Beast:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, still looking to regain his traction after a series of mind-numbing debate performances (oh, and an awful job as governor), has let the world and Iowa know that he “wasn’t on his game” recently (make that the last four months) because of a serious back surgery he had undergone over the summer. The surgery had by his report wiped him out. “But no excuses,” he added, making as forceful an excuse as he could.

Finally, the truth is out. I don’t make a habit of tooting my own horn in this space, but–just this one time–I first raised the health issue as the reason for Perry’s poor debate performances back in October. I blogged about this after the one of the early debates, how Perry looked uncomfortable, twisting his torso and struggling with his posture and seeming to lose energy as the debate went on. I wrote that Perry was off his game and attributed his  problems to his back operation and noted that he had started wearing orthopedic shoes instead of boots. (My post was picked up the next day in the “Political Wire” blog.) What the Daily Beast article omits is that the surgery, a spinal fusion, was not a standard operation; it involved the application of Perry’s own adult stem cells to the affected area–a procedure that is not covered by insurance, nor is it approved by the FDA. It borders on quackery. The question of how Perry is going to pay for the operation has not been answered; a spokesman said at the time that the Perry’s would pay for whatever is not covered by insurance. Well, NOTHING is covered by insurance. So, who paid for the operation? Where are the medical bills? It had to be very expensive.

In November, the issue of Perry’s surgery came before the Texas Medical Board. From the Associated Press:

The experimental stem cell procedure that Texas Gov. Rick Perry underwent this summer could be restricted or even blocked under new rules being considered Friday by the state’s Medical Board.

Some top scientists are questioning the safety and wisdom of the procedure, and doctors say it may run up against federal rules. It also carries potential health threats, ranging from blood clots to increased cancer risk.

The Republican presidential candidate had stem cells taken from fat in his own body, which were then grown in a lab. They were injected into Perry’s back and his bloodstream during an operation in July to fuse part of his spine.

The Perry campaign has repeatedly denied that there is anything wrong with their candidate’s health. They weren’t telling the truth, and they only started telling the truth when Perry finally had a good debate performance in Iowa. No doubt the Perry campaign would like to go back and rewrite history, but it’s too late.

Would Perry be crazy enough to resort to a risky medical stunt involving adult stem cells in the hopes of bolstering his “scientific” bona fides among evangelicals? In other words, was Perry willing to put his spine (and money) where is mouth is and claim adult stem cells are a sufficient treatment and thereby block further research on embryonic stem cells, should he become President?

Whatever you say about Perry, there is a certain roguish charm to him having some risky spinal fusion procedure that runs on the edges of accepted medical practice.

It’s kind of like those thrill-seekers who hit the road and get cheaper face lifts in Mexico or the brave soul who let someone inject fix-a-flat into their buttocks for a curvier figure.

Overall, a US Presidential candidate who seeks risky medical procedures on the edge of accepted medicine is proving they’re not afraid to take chances.

It could be a point in Perry’s favour among the much sought-after vote from “risky medical procedure enthusiasts” out there who also vote in Republican primaries.

Let’s wait and see what George Will says about it…

Can you tell me a medical procedure that involves general anesthesia that isn’t risky? The “risks” associated with what Perry had done sound like the risks of countless procedures the FDA already approves of. Back surgery is risky, whether the omnipotent FDA likes the procedure or not. Heaven forbid the FDA not approve, God knows they’ve never been wrong. Try having a loved one withering away with cancer while the FDA sits on approval of a life saving drug. The fact the FDA doesn’t approve of the procedure speaks volumes. Perry isn’t quite as dumb as I thought.

On a more serious note, Perry is beginning a grueling eleventh-hour slog through Iowa and is even planning campaign events for New Year’s Eve. I can’t see what good this is going to do – voters don’t want to deal with politics during the second half of December and the only people who will likely turn out for these press-the-flesh events are the few Iowa voters who already like or are receptive to Perry. Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum are trying similar futile last-ditch efforts and at this point I think Bachmann is the only one with any chance of it making a difference, particularly if she performs well in tomorrow night’s debate.

    Mr. Burka,

You toot your own horn insufficiently.

You give yourself credit for being the first to link Perry’s disastrous debate performances and his back surgery (which was a health care procedure undoubtedly unavailable to the 99%). It is true you were the first.

But you give yourself too little credit.

In all probability, you were not just the first to suggest this link, you were most likely the inventor of this explanation. Your explanation is totally plausible (which is why it occurred to you in the first place and also why it is so well suited to the Perry campaign’s use), but it seems more likely to be a convenient excuse rather than a true explanation. If it were the real explanation, one would expect we would have heard this explanation often and loudly long before now.

Why would the Perry campaign adopt the excuse that you speculated about if it were not true? Think of the debate failure explanations discussed in the media:
    (1) Perry is not smart,
    (2) Perry is ill prepared, or
    (3) Perry was still recovering from surgery.
The third explanation (which you were the first to offer) is – by far – the most sympathetic to Perry. How could the campaign possibly resist adopting your proposed excuse? It is too good to leave alone.

The only real question is why the Perry campaign waited so long to spin the debates in this fashion. If your too-generous-by-half explanation were true, you have to imagine even a hit-and-miss campaign would have stumbled across this truth sooner.

PS – I don’t wish this to be misconstrued as implying that you were spinning anything on anyone’s behalf; I think you were just speculating in a wholly plausible fashion, but I think your speculation was probably more generous to Perry than the actual facts known only to those inside the campaign.

In 2009, a popular stripper told me – while we were just chit chatting and not talking about presidential or gubernatorial races – that a member of Rick Perry’s entourage paid her $500 to leave a local Austin strip club with them.

After she and the Perrybot got outside, Rick Perry was waiting for her in a limo. She got in and started to play around with him and here were her words to me exactly — “I think he was too coked up” to get it up, to perform sexually.

That is your fruity, religious right, Ted Haggard copying governor of Texas in action.

“Too coked up” to perform sexually. Beautiful.

This summer in August, after I ran my ad, I was contacted by someone who was friends with Rick Perry’s coke dealer. This person is a well known coke dealer in Austin who operates out of one gay bars – Charlies, in fact. Her friend had told her “I am Rick Perry’s coke dealer.”

And then 2 days ago, I got a call from someone who knew one of Anita’s divorce attorneys. This person used to date a stripper in Houston years ago. She told him Perry was mining the strip club for girls and that the cocaine flowed free whenever Perry was around. This was back when Perry was Lt. Governor.

Apparently, Perry has been behaving this way all over the state of Texas: Austin, San Antonio, Houston. Really, he has probably been doing this nationwide … for a long time.

And by the way, that original dancer. $100? Really? Rick Perry paid her a whopping FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS for a little backseat limo play time. That is ridiculous amount of money.

You would have to be completelely coked up or just plain stupid to pay that kind of money.

And in Rick Perry’s case … I think it was both!

“Poll:Dramatic drop in Gingrich support in Iowa”

Folks, this is setting up to be a narrow, although highly significant, Ron Paul win in Iowa. And from there it is rocketship off to the friendly confines of New Hampshire.

    http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/poll-dramatic-drop-gingrich-support-iowa/258131

A new survey from pollster Scott Rasmussen shows support for Newt Gingrich in Iowa has fallen sharply in recent days. The poll shows the former House speaker with the support of 20 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers — down from 32 percent in the last Rasmussen survey released November 15.

Gingrich has now fallen into second place in the Iowa race, behind Mitt Romney, who is at 23 percent, up from 19 percent in the last Rasmussen survey.

The complete poll results are: Romney, 23 percent; Gingrich 20 percent; Ron Paul, 18 percent; Rick Perry 10 percent; Michele Bachmann, 9 percent; Rick Santorum, 6 percent; and Jon Huntsman, 5 percent. Ten percent of likely caucus-goers said they support some other candidate or are not sure how they will vote.

In the new survey, every candidate but Gingrich gained support in the last few weeks. The biggest gainers were Romney, up four points; Paul, up eight points; and Perry, up four points. Michele Bachmann climbed three points, as did Jon Huntsman, who has been to Iowa a grand total of one time in the campaign.

Gingrich, on the other hand, fell 12 points.

The more obvious question isn’t if Perry is done nationally, he obviously is, but how such a goofy dude got to be Governor and stay Governor for so long. Wasn’t there a smarter, more articulate, think for himself Republican that could have caught fire in the 1990s? But then the question answers itself. The Powers that Be in the Republican Party had no interest in elevating someone who could think for himself. That type of person would be dangerous. Instead, elevate someone vacuous, glib, and especially, one who could follow orders (when he can remember them). And thats how we got Rick Perry. Understanding that, I feel sorry for him. Like the awkward seventh grader, he probably has no idea that the joke is on him, and starts to laugh when others are making fun of him. He probably won’t even understand when they stop paying for his dinners. The Lennie Small of politics, petting his rabbit.

Food for thought for the useful idiots. If Perry is so bad what does that say about democrats who can’t beat him?
Democrats are making their usual mistake judging someone on style and not substance. But then again they always do.
What came apparent in the debate is Perry will be on the National ticket. So you democrats get to ask yourself next November why can’t we beat Perry? Are we that bad?
Now thats funny I don’t care who you are.

What? No blog post about last night’s debate? What do we pay you for? Oh wait, we don’t pay you. We just like to read your takes and then go to the comments section to see what crazy stuff Morrow has written. Speaking of Morrow, did you hear where he set up a phone center in his home in west Austin for Ron Paul and is serving free Totino’s Pizza Rolls and Mountain Dew to all who want to come on over and make calls to Iowa voters? Here is the script they are using for these calls to prospective Paul voters. It may just work!

Hello Mr/Ms _________, I’m ________, a devouted Ron Paul supporter from his home state of Texas. I want to take a moment of your time to tell you about how Dr. Paul is going to rid the world of the Illuminati, the Bilderbergers, the Zionists, and the New World Order. Recently journalist Alex Jones said that Dr. Paul is like, “Obi Wan Kenobi – he is our only hope.” Won’t you please join with me to defeat the dark side of the force and elect a true Jedi warrior like Dr. Paul to the presidency. You, as an Iowan, can help us take that first step back to creating balance in the universe. Oh, and did you know that LBJ killed JFK and Bush and Clinton ran an international child prostitution ring for the CIA? Dr. Paul will abolish that as well. Ok, well, see you at the caucus! For Liberty!

    End call.

Texan Politico is probably “Dave Nalle.” Can you imagine is chagrin at his candidate Gary Johnson dumping the Republicans and jumping into the Libertarian party who Nalle hates on all the time.

Or the fact that 12 year state representative Glen Maxey and #1 gay activist in Texas Glen Maxey puts out a book pretty much confirming everything I have been saying about Katy Rick Perry for eons (at least the gay angle).

Or the fact that Ron Paul is on a ginormous roll, with even the “establishment” willing to prop him up for 3 weeks.

U ought to be enjoying the fact that the religious right in Texas has had a hand grenade blow up in their face.

Nalle once told me that his mommy worked for the CIA, that explains his defensiveness on anything CIA related – such as murdering John Kennedy.

It appears that others across the country can’t be hoodwinked quite as easily as we Texans. Of course, I blame a great deal of this malady on the Texas media. They don’t ask the right questions, and when they do, they just scratch the surface and don’t dig deep enough. No one in office in Texas appears to be afriad of the media, and with all the questionable money exchanges going on, they should be. Perry should never have made it as far as the has. Letting him take credit for things he had nothing to do with, and pointing fingers at the legislature for all the bad, is just plain negligence.

Now, we are about to get another attractive, unqualifed, well heeled, well connected,”do you know who I am…I’ll call your boss” guy in the race to replace KBH up in D.C. What a joke. Has this guy ever earned one cent in the real world?
Craig James probably stands a good chance of winning since we Texans seem to have a skewed sense of who is best qualifed. I can only pray that the Red Raiders, who know exactly how James operates, makes their voices heard.

I have been completed vindicated in everything I have been saying about Perry. Glen Maxey has pulled out a sledgehammer and smacked Rick Perry right in the gut.

This story is not going away and the endgame is not going to be favorable to Perry. What it is doing is shaking out even more leads on Rick Perry, who apparently was quite active in his double life.

The bottom line is Maxey and I only know the TIP of the iceberg as it relates to Perry. I shudder at the full truth being known.

Months ago Nikki Haley was using her entire organization in South Carolina to support Rick Perry. Perry was never going to win the DeMint endorsement, but he was “married” to Nikki Haley.

The Perrybots were going to trot out a Haley endorsement at a rally at Clemson University just before the South Carolina primary (I speculate).

Nikki endorsing Romney is like being dumped by your wife/mother/grandmother at the same time. A few years ago Perry/Haley wrote and Op Ed in the WSJ just as Perry/Sanford had written one a few years before that. Perry has had his lusting eyes on South Carolina for years, carefully positioning himself to win that state in a presidential primary. Perry put a LOT of time, effort, money into wooing Haley.

Now Ron Paul is going to run laps around Rick Perry in South Carolina. Not to mention Romney!

Perry thought so, too. He hired one of Nikki Haley’s friends for Texas Insurance Commissioner and the new Texas Insurance Commissioner hosted a fundraiser for Nikki Haley in Texas with Texas insurance companies in attendance. I’m sure the fundraiser was held simply because lots of Texans have a strong interest in the administration of state government in South Carolina.

    http://www.dcbureau.org/201112136815/national-security-news-service/newt-gingrich-marianne-and-the-arms-dealera-buried-fbi-investigation.html

“On October 5, Sarkis Soghanalian, once the world’s largest private arms dealer, died at 82. He had sold weapons to scores of dictators including Saddam Hussein, and he took many secrets with him to his grave. But one secret he did not take involves Newt Gingrich when he was Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. DCBureau has learned that Gingrich was at the center of a U.S. Justice Department criminal investigation in the late 1990s for a scheme to shake down the arms dealer for a $10 million bribe in exchange for Gingrich using his influence as Speaker to get the Iraq arms embargo lifted so Soghanalian could collect $54 million from Saddam Hussein’s regime for weapons he had delivered during the Iran-Iraq War.”
