Hutchison campaign admits videotaping Perry; audiotape transcript follows

Houston’s KHOU broke the story.

A commenter sent the audiotape, which I listened to. Here is what I heard on the audiotape. After Perry asks, “Are we in one?” — referring to a recession — and the laughter, Perry says:

But seriously, the fact is that because we have positioned ourselves so well economically, we’re going to be the first state that starts showing that major recovery, and the rest of the states will follow [behind us? beside us?] whenever that is going to be.

The tape was unquestionably edited after “Are we in one?” to eliminate the words, “but seriously….” So the answer to the headline of my first post on this subject, “Is the Perry videotape a dirty trick?” is yes.

Here is the situation as I see it.

Perry: He committed a gaffe. He made a joke about the recession that revealed, as I wrote at the time, arrogance and callousness.

Hutchison: Her campaign is now making the charge that Perry really didn’t know that there is a recession. This won’t stick. Perry’s discussion of a recovery is itself an acknowledgment that Texas is in a recession.

To sum up: Perry made a mistake. Point to Team Hutchison. Team Hutchison cheated. Point taken away from Team Hutchison. I think that the memory of the joke will be longer lasting than the memory of the mendacious editing.

So Team kay has admitted to violating state law by posting a video without a proper disclaimer? Good to know her campaign hacks from DC don’t think Texas law applies to them.

The KBH campaign has become painful to bear witness to. It wasn’t bad enough she was banned from Google because of the “embedded” remarks on one of her official web pages. Now she is blatantly doctoring video tape of Perry’s speeches to make something he said take on an entirely different meaning? That’s just poor campaign tactics, and it’s an embarrassment to the Republican party as well as the people of Texas that one of our elected senators could allow her campaign staff to act this way.

Burka, say what you want on the “point match-ups”, but you’re going to have a hard time justifying her tactics on this one. This was no joke, and I’m sure it isn’t funny to the Perry campaign. She’s opening the door to some fairly malicious campaigning. And it’s worth noting the Perry campaign has seemed to avoid acts of retaliation along the same lines.

Now there’s some irony, I thought the KBH campaign was trying to paint Perry as the bad guy in this race? However, if things continue as they are I’m not saying Perry will come out of this thing looking like a saint, but Kay’s definitely looking a lot more like a sinner.

There is no justification for her campaign’s tactics, and I’m certainly not going to try to justify them. Editing a video to create a misleading impression is dirty pool by any standard. There is nothing to argue about here.

All of Perry’s ‘attacks’ have the air of a spoof – you can’t help but laugh because it is only a tiny bit mean.

This is big time mean – cheating and sinning. And in keeping with the paragraph quoted above and the other decsriptive prose in the Slater column. It will stick.

Paul is not nearly as giddy in this posting as he was when he saw the “doctored” video tape. How can you or anyone now trust what the campaign sends or says or what Kay says?

Kay’s campaign lied when they said Rove was not involved in her campaign early on and come to find out he was. Kay’s campaign lied when they said Rick Wiley was not leaving and he did. Kay’s campaign lied when they said they did not place “hidden words” on their website and they were banned by google. Kay’s campaign lied when they said she was “monitoring” the vote to defund ACORN and instead was at a fundraiser in Dallas. Kay lied when she said she would vote against the bailout the day before she vote FOR the bailout. Kay lied when she said she would serve only two terms and then ran for a third. Kay lied when she said she was pro-life, but voted against a symbolic resolution against Roe-v-Wade. Kay lied when she said she opposed taxpayer funded abortions and then voted for taxpayer funded abortions in committee…there seems to be a pattern here and that is the real story.

The problem for Perry is twofold. Nothing was doctored, and, if you listen to the rest of the audio, there is no empathy expressed for those in economic hardship–at all. Also, to the claim of election law violations, there is no use of “magic words” to ask anyone to vote for or against a candidate. Anyone who truly believes that a law was broken in the instance of the perry speech recording must be incensed that Colyandro, Toomey, and Hammond are walking the streets as free men.

Those guys are kinda fond of Perry.

  10. General Sam Houston says:

Let me see if I understand. You think the KBH campaign is guilty of a dirty trick because the tape was cut off after the “joke” and the audience laughter it provoked. But what followed was not what you previously suggested was required for Perry — some expression of sympathy for those who have lost their jobs and their savings in the deepening recession. Instead, he reverted to his usual talking points about how good small government was for Texas.
What’s more, I am told by an attendee that the “but seriously” was done in a half-jocular manner. So he didn’t do the mandatory 180 — the full story doesn’t help Perry in the slightest. All that is changed is that you, Paul, have moved the goalposts in Perry’s favor — perhaps in an effort to appear neutral and objective.
Here’s a suggestion. View the full tape. I suspect it will soon be available, if it’s not already available now. Then go back to your original post and see if the “but seriously” section does anything to change your original impression of Perry as displaying “an egotism, an arrogance, a self-importance, a callousness that are downright creepy.” I’ll wager your original impression will only be reinforced.
And look at the posts above. The Perry Blog Management Team simply cannot let this matter drop. They have been stung, and stung badly. Perry has been caught being the jerk that he is. Feel the outrage. A smarter campaign operation would have moved on, but the Perry folks are dwelling on this. They’ve put Rob Johnson on active spin patrol, and tried to get Michael Quinn Sullivan involved as a “neutral source who was there when it happened.” Talk about desperation!

    To General Sam –

Do we have a difference of opinion here? I don’t regard Perry’s “but seriously” as an exculpatory statement. It isn’t an expression of empathy. There is no expression of empathy. But I think it is clear that Perry understands that there is a recession and that Texas is experiencing it. I’m not moving any goalposts. The Hutchison camp did themselves a disservice by editing the videotape. An unaltered version would have made the point just as well. This was not a standup comedy routine. You can’t “but seriously” your way out of a gaffe.

Paul, here’s what I believe — Team Hutchison edited the tape because Perry made a tasteless joke. It’s not the first time — he does it all the time but no one pays any attention or calls him on it. It’s so “normal” that it’s only recognized for what it is – compassionless and out-of-touch with mainstream values – when it’s isolated and people have to really look at it. That includes much of the so-called mainstream media (and especially the right-wing media), which has been giving both Perry and his predecessor a pass for years.

Pretty ugly when you actually look at it, huh? As evidenced by your reaction in your first blog post.

“I think they did it because they want to make the point that Perry doesn’t think Texas is in a recession.”

Tell me that was a joke, Paul.

Clearly the take away here is not about Perry’s supposed ignorance of the recession – that’s just a bonus. The point is that he thinks it’s a punchline; that HE DOESN’T REALLY GIVE A DAMN.

To a great extent, your first post title (”Let them eat chili”) was spot on; now you’re over-thinking it and getting a ridiculous case of the vapors over this silly meme about “doctoring” the tape (also known as editing). The extra context – what he said after the hearty laugh about the recession was shared by his business friends – does nothing to soften the callousness and insensitivity of Perry’s joke. Nothing. Thus, said “doctoring” is irrelevant. Tagging this as a “dirty trick” played on Perry is by turns laughable and a red herring. The egg is all on Perry’s face right now, and this tape – with oir without his subsequent rermarks – will ccontinue to pay dividends for Perry’s opponents for the forseeable future. This is no one’s fault but Perry’s, and none but the most ardent of right-wing Perry acolytes (if there’s any left) will buy the victimization (”I was framed!”) routine from his camp. End of story.

    Reply »

    Anonymous Reply:

You’re right on the first part, Cyrus. It’s clear even from the tape that was “cut” that Perry wasn’t really confused about whether we are in a recession. But I’m not at all sure that his crass joke will continue to pay dividents for his opponents.

What you refer to as his “business friends” are really just a bunch of pretty normal chamber of commerce members (albeit in a Republican-dominated part of the greater Houston area). I’ll guarantee that many if not all of those who laughed are feeling the pinch of the recession.

Therein lies the problem. Too many people (especially in Texas) still don’t get that insensitivity should not be the basis of a joke. If they did, Perry wouldn’t have gotten by with “adios mofo,” “let’s just get on down the road,” etc. And GWB wouldn’t have been our governor, much less our president.

    paulburka Reply:

    To Cyrus (above)

I wouldn’t have brought up what the Perry campaign thought Hutchison was up to if I hadn’t talked to them. The material after the laughter was important from their point of view because it showed that Perry was aware of the recession’s affect on Texas. I don’t just make this stuff up.

But seriously Burka, why are you letting the Perry people lie to you?

Plus, if I read correctly, Rick Perry was interviewed by a liberal think tank on Saturday and didn’t express any regret or say his comments were taken out of context. When you’re the No. 1 exporting state in the country, which we have been for the last seven years, and you have that kind of international and national contraction of the economy, sure, you’re going to be impacted by it and we have our challenges. But we’re still substantially better than any other state. We’re 1.8 percent less than the national average on unemployment. It’s not lost on me that those Texans that have lost a job, that’s a family. But what we can do and what we do work on, Dan, every day, the real answer to that is not creating another big-government program to keep people unemployed. The answer is to create a climate where the jobs get created in this state and that man and woman can have a good job to take care of their family in the future”
