Take THAT, Dick Cheney
Here is the Perry campaign’s response to the news that Cheney will campaign for Hutchison. Thanks to Channel 5 in the Metroplex for sending it to me.
Mark Miner: “It’s not surprising, since they both worked in Washington for so long. Washington insiders stick together.”

Brisoce Democrat says:
Burka, look for the Perry camp to launch NEGATIVE attack ads against KBH by tying her to the DC establishment with more negative attack ads to come later.
Perry is a season-pro when running successful negative ads, he’s done it in his 5 statewide election victories.

Oh, thank you so much. I never would have guessed that Perry was going to launch negative attack ads against Hutchison if you hadn’t told me. Thank goodness that I found out.
Do they actually pay you for this stuff?

There’s only one reason that campaigns resort to negative attacks:
THEY WORK.
Perry, and all other successful politicians, know this and deploy them.
They are not usually successful officeholders, but they are successful politicians.
If Team KBH would even read the newsclips about Texas’ insurance rates, school drop-outs, TRUE taxation burdens, etc…, they would be strongly positioned in the negative attack game, too.
Cheney..the ultimate hired gun!
Sorry. Too easy.

The Cheney endorsement confirms yet again:
(1) that Kay and her team don’t “get it” [it's all about the Texas/D.C. dichotomy...even though it's pure kool-aide, the ignorant Republican primary electorate is already drunk on it]; and
(2) that there is no significant difference between KBH and Perry on any substantive policy issues that matter for Texas. We’re all doomed for the next four years either way because of the reflexive R voter complex. All the “Texas is so much better than the rest of the nation” is pure kool-aide, too, and based on a myopic view of isolated, self-serving statistics spouted by Perriophiles that don’t in any way portray the true overall state of the State.

I don’t care for Dick Cheney — I think he exercised undue influence over President Bush, who allowed it to happen, and may have violated his oath of office — but I think it is silly to argue that his endorsement of Hutchison is bad for KBH because he represents “Washington.” This is just blather, worse than bad spin. Dick Cheney was vice-president of the United States. His endorsement counts.

I’m having a hard time understanding how Perry can pound on the Hutchison/Cheney bond when he and Rudy have been rubbing each other’s briskets for several years now.
If you want to poll all of the far right Perry supporters, who do you think most would align themselves with? Cheney or Gulliani?

I agree with Kimmy. What are the issues that actually affect Texans? Where do they stand on dealing with next session’s budget, and what will be their funding and policy priorities during the next four years? Can someone report on that instead of the vapid, insipid campaign back-and-forth press releases?

What does this endorsement achieve, except a total turnoff to independents? How can KBH marshall independents to show up at a primary with “Lord Valdemort’s” endorsement?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas lost more jobs in September (44,700) than any other state except New York – California lost 39,300 and Michigan lost 21,500.
OK, Perry Team, let me help you with the spin — Texas was already in so much better position than every other state that we actually had more employed people available to lose their jobs. Not to worry, though, we have no plan other than doing more of the same that got us into the better position to lose more jobs in the first place. And because we rejected the federal government’s unemployment stimulus, it’ll be better if and when you ever get a job again.

Why do you think GWB won’t get involved? The last TX president, LBJ, involved himself in TX politics after he came home (although he only lived a few short years after office). Why wouldn’t GWB? You have to remember, presidents love politics…that is why they got to POTUS in the first place. Don’t start thinking GWB is “above” it all…you will be wrong.

Dick's Shotgun says:
Here is an eamil floating around Texas today:
‘I found the transcript of Cheney’s first radio spot. quote: Hi. This is Dick Cheney, and I’m calling on all good Texas Republicans to rally around one of my best friends from Washington, Kay Bailey Hutchison. When I was Vice President, I could always count on Kay to help spend money that we don’t have. She was a key part of the leadership in Washington that helped Republicans lose both houses of Congress in under 5 years, balloon the deficit, and put conservatism on the retreat from coast to coast. We could count on her on critical civil liberties votes, and she’s as careful with the budget as I am with a shotgun. If you’re proud of the way that the GOP governed in DC from 2000-2008, if you’re proud of soaring deficits, if you enjoyed losing both houses of Congress, then Washington Kay is the candidate for you.’

I think Burka is right that W is will not get involved. However, he might make some difference if he did. Bush’s job approval rating (Gallup) when he left office was 75% among Republicans. I bet that his personal popularity was just as high and that a lot of Texans think he made a better governor than president.
Bush might make some difference among undecided Republicans. The impact on the vote would not be large–but a single endorsement seldom is. At a minimum a Bush endorsement would send one candidate on the defensive for a week.

Perry needs to worry about Barbara or 41 getting involved, not 43 or Laura. Barbara and 41 swing big influence, especially in Houston. And after all, Perry got pissy with their son on a national stage.

To the Perry blog team, we all celebrated the life of Teel Bivins this week with a number of stories of his leadership, of how he challenged his own party to do what was ‘right for Texas’.
Can any of you point to a single display of similar leadership from your governor — where he has bucked the monied R crowd or the social conservatives to do what he thought was ‘right for Texas’?

What a sorry state of affairs. The Texas GOP is losing it. KBH brings in Dr. Strangelove, Perry touts his “record”…..I’m thinking our great state will suffer through 2-3 more election cycles and the Dem’s will rise up and spank the far right pretty good. Garvin, Perry is likely to win the primary and general in 2010, and retire from the Governor’s Mansion after 14 years on January 20, 2015 and succeeded by Dewhurst, who will chicken out in 2018 which will result in the TX Democrats taking over EVERYTHING.
GOP fatigue is going to hit Texas sooner or later.
