Introducing a new video series

This post marks the first interview of “On the Lege,” our new video series in which Nate Blakeslee and I will interview legislators about the important issues of the session, assisted by our intern, Katherine Stevens. The first interview is with Representative Wayne Christian, of Center, who is the president of the Texas Conservative Coalition.

If this is new form of journalism for Texas Monthly is to have any meaning, it must have context. Rep. Christian says 42 percent of the House’s proposed budget goes to education. The budget is smaller than it was. The actual amount of money for education is … undisclosed. Future interviews must have the context included, or you’re as worthless as most TV newscasts.

It isn’t that there isn’t enough money appropriated for education, its that not enough of the money is actually going into the classroom.

People in the House from East Texas generally tend to look and sound like Baptist preachers, I’ve noticed. He’s even got the name for it.

Thanks goes to Rep Wayne Christian. Wayne gives video updates almost weekly to advise voters what is going on in the Texas House. 99% of the HD Reps don’t take the time and energy to communicate as often or by video as much as Rep Christian. I like his transparency and responses. I’m sure if you would have asked him more questions, he would have answered them.

Kudos to Rep. Wayne Christian. His weekly videos updates are most informative. Hopefully local school district school boards will take a hard look at implementing prioritized administrative budget cuts prior to cutting non-classroom positions.

I love Wayne Christian’s weekly videos. Very well done. Very informative and well produced. Good idea. Every legislator should do it as part of their constituent outreach.
