John Sharp, Bill White, and the Already Conceded 2010 Governor’s Race
Anybody else think the entrance of the former Comptroller and the current Houston mayor — the only two big Democratic brands in a state where “big Democratic brand” is defined super-generously — into the theoretical race for KBH’s Senate seat dooms the Ds to an historically crappy year in 2010? Who’s going to run for the top-of-the-ticket statewide offices if not one of these guys? Haven’t the Dems just conceded the next governor’s race — and the lite guv’s race, and the AG’s race, and the Comptroller’s race? They may be pining for the relative power and possibility of the 2006 ticket. Ugh.
The serious point here is one I and others have made before: You are not a real party, you are not a competitive party, unless you field actual, plausible candidates for high office. And from this vantage point, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

It’s unfortunate that the leaders of the Texas Democratic Party seemed to have learned their craft at a mortuary school.
You’re right: the Texas Democratic party is not competitive; it’s like the Republican party in Texas before 1952, dominated by place-holders who are caught up in in-group politics. That won’t change until enough Democrats decide that enough is enough and mount a locally-based statewide challenge to the gang that can’t shoot straight.

Who would you suggest they run? I can’t even see anyone on the horizon.

Evan,
United States Senator: I think White can actually win this thing over either Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst (R) or Railroad Commission Chairman Michael Williams (R).
Governor-Perry will get reelected to a 3rd full term and become the state’s 4th governor to serve 3 terms.
Lieutenant Governor-safe to say that State Attorney General Greg Abbott (R) will win this post, unless the TX Dems put up Tony Sanchez (D) or Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief (D) to run against him.
State Attorney General-if Dewhurst does run for the Senate (more likely), Williams will be forced to run for the State AG spot to avoid getting crushed by the millionaire Lieutenant Governor in a Senate race.
Comptroller-can Paul Hobby run for this post again or is he damaged goods after his ‘98 loss.
Land Commissioner-rumors are that Kinky Friedman might run against incumbent Jerry Patterson (R), who is allowed to seek reelection to a 3rd term.
Agriculture Commissioner-Staples will get reelected in 2010.
Railroad Commissioner-Carrillo wins 2nd full term hands down easily.
