The Nuge loves Waco. Texas Monthly should check out downtown Waco with its lofts, restaurants and the Brazos River flowing through. Lots going on here – one of Texas’ best kept secrets.

    Another insightful one, Evan.
My favorite TM cover is actually November 2000. The then Governor Bush, which your magazine had sucked up to the previous six years, was running for the highest office in the world, and your cover story was “Elvis in Texas,” recounting the King’s time in the army here. Still gives me goosebumps. My second favorite was a few months before that, when you actually did write about W’s presidential bid and your cover was “He’s Not Dumb and He Can Win!” I believe Burka actually wrote the story. Well, at this late date, what’s left to say? Burka was half-right I guess. My third favorite was before the 2004 election and it was Bush again and your cover was “Maybe” to signal your (or Burka’s) long-overdue doubts, what with that little imbroglio in Iraq. That third cover would be my all time favorite Texas Monthly cover if you had just added one more word after “Maybe”: “Not,” as in “Maybe Not.” But I know the editorial board has a lot of important stuff on its mind. Like Ted Nugent. Hey, a washed-up wacko rock star… I suppose it could be worse…. Has been worse, if I recall.

Dude, get a grip — it’s not ALL about politics; supposed to be a magazine about all things TEXAS, so I guess Ted Nugent qualifies, as it seems he lives near Crawford (or at least has a house there). So, even though he may be a fairly recent addition to our population, it seems he is relevant enough to garner the cover spot.

My favorite cover was the two astronauts in bed together because it created such a brew-ha-ha and–upon seeing the cover on a magazine stand in the store–forced me to have that critical conversation with my 4 year old son about what happens when one astronaut likes another astronaut very much.

Has ‘Nuge’ now taken up arms with the border Minutemen? He’s looking quite vigilant.

Beware of the HEB shelves, Prince. This month has the tawdry “Moon Landing: An Oral History” piece.

Wasn’t Nugent the one who yelled racially-charged comments during Perry’s 2nd inaugural ball on January 16, 2007 ?

Nice cover! Not sure how much “photoshopping” was done to the sky/background — but the cover looks great. Somehow, even if you don’t love everything (or anything) about the Nugent guy, the photo depicts a wildness and sense of freedom that is powerful and compelling.

    – give that art director a raise!! Not many could make a cover with such a controversial guy look so appealing

Evan, it appears that State Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Houston), sensing his influence and power fading very quickly in the Legislature this year, is certainly likely to run for Houston Mayor for the 3rd time.

BREAKING: Berman is IN for Texas Governor, meaning there’s a good chance that an April 2010 Runoff is possible.

I love Willie Nelson, barbecue, and bluebonnets. I love BUrka and Eileen, and I think Evan must be smart. But what kind of idiot would think Nugent goes on the cover of TM? Nugent is a great example of what we need less of in Texas. I thought we were through with nuts from Crawford.

Let’s see…an obviously independent guy holding a gun on the cover of the magazine and living in Texas. And the problem with that would be what?

Great cover and great article (because of Ted’s indominable spirit). Poetic coincidence putting Ted Roosevelt and Ted Nugent in the same issue. Two larger than life hero’s of freedom, 2A, and hunting. They go well together. You really should consider a monthly Nuge article. The copies are flying off the shelf down here where I’m at. I’ll bet this will be your best month this year. You really should give the Nuge a big ol’ Texas bear hug. He’s making you some big bucks.

    Dear Editor,
I am a Republican who has been subscribing for two years (buying off of the newstands longer), and am writing to express my joy at this months issue. Ted Nugent is an icon. He has done more to promote the Constitution of the United States than anyone since Ben Franklin. By putting him on your cover you have reached a new pinicle. I think you should give both John Spong and Dan Winters a HUGE bonus for such a good article and then strik a deal with the Nuge for a guest column much like you do with Kinky.
I will renew both my subscription as well as the two gift subscriptions that I give to my loved ones when the time is due.
