The Nuge vs. The Waco Trib

Just got a missive — unguided missile? — from my pal Ted Nugent saying he’s been fired by the Waco Tribune-Herald, which has new owners as of a couple of weeks ago. I’ve contacted Carlos Sanchez, the editor of the Trib, and asked for his response, which I’ll post below when I receive it. (For now, click here to read his comments as published in the paper today.)

Nugent’s email to me:

Just been fired from Waco Trib. Now they will have to rely on their other New York Times Best Sellers, and array of clever and diverse journalists to convey their diverse & tolerant point(s) of view. Here’s my Teditorial after being told to not criticize in my Sunday features that they chose to not run.

——

I’ll Take Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press for $100, Alex   by Ted Nugent

When the Nazis had the Americans surrounded in the town of Bastogne, they
demanded American General McAuliffe surrender or they would level the
city. General McAuliffe’s reply: Nuts!

The new editor of the Waco Trib recently told me that I could only write nice
things about people, that I could not be critical. Basically, that I
need to tone it down. I can not, nor will not, comply with this Romper
Room request. My reply: Nuts!

The editor is wrong to try and muzzle my opinions.

As a columnist, I express my opinions. That’s what columnists do. That’s
also the charge of an independent and free press.

The job of the press is to be the “fourth” arm of government. To
intentionally muzzle itself is to fail at its most basic watchdog
responsibility. As readers, voters and citizens we should demand a
watchdog press, not a lapdog press.

I can’t envision Thomas Jefferson, George Washington or Ben Franklin
making a request of an anti-King George columnist to tone it down. I
can’t imagine Martin Luther King toning down his message. It is
impossible for me to fathom any American to tone down what is in his
heart and soul.

I criticize where I believe criticism is due. That’s what Thomas Paine
did when he published Common Sense prior to the Revolutionary War. He
criticized King George for his heavy handed and wrong policies. We are
free in large part because of Thomas Paine’s open, routine and strident
criticism.

I have criticized President Obama and liberals for what I consider to be
destructive, anti-American policies that will hurt our economy and harm
your health. Not once have I criticized him personally because I have
never met the man. As far as I know he is a decent enough guy, but in my
opinion, is politically naive and very wrong, even dangerous for America. So do many
other Americans as indicated by the shrinking support for his takeover
of the health care system and numerous other heavy handed, foolish moves.

Obama’s policies are bankrupting America. He supports a health care bill
that he hasn’t even read, nor have those in congress who support it.
If that doesn’t deserve massive amount of criticism, what does?

When I have criticized President Obama, I have almost always countered
his dunderheaded, Marxist policies with a free market, more personal
freedom alternative. More government control is not the answer to what
ails America. Obama believes otherwise.

This newspaper and others should encourage spirited and lively debate
and criticism, especially when so many newspapers are losing
subscribers. I don’t support milquetoast journalism. It bores me.

You are free to disagree with my opinions. In fact, I encourage those of
you who do to fill the letters to the editor page of this newspaper. I
revel in open debate. That’s the America I know and love. Express
yourself, Texas. Lay it on the line. Give it your best shot. Be bold in
your disagreement.

Construcitve, bold criticism is cool. It rocks. It can literally change the course and destiny of an individual, neighborhood, community, and nation. It is the most basic of our Constitutional rights — the 1st Amendment. Failing to criticize emboldens politicians to stay on course regardless how many icebergs are dead ahead. Political correctness is the cancer of journalism, not its cure.

America and Texas was born with a defiant streak. Those genes still flow
through my veins. To request that I not criticize is to spit on the
memory of those who gave birth to America. Again, I criticize where I
believe criticism is due. That’s my civic job and your job as Americans.
If the editor of this newspaper doesn’t like that, he will have to fire
me. I will not surrender to his wrong demands.

In the words of another famous American military man, William Barrett
Travis, commander of the Alamo: God & Texas. Victory or death.

When a writer starts out comparing his boss to the Nazis and himself to George Washington ( and Jefferson, Franklin, and Paine!), hyperbole is the order of the day. Then he gives the ultimate adolescent criticism:”It bores me.” And finally, we have the Alamo, facing victory or death. Sounds like the rantings of a slightly educated teenager.

Ted. I’m a journalist. I’m sad to see the Waco paper’s move. You’re right: timid journalism with editors living in fear is NOT the way to sell papers, or do good journalism.
You’re seeing why the newspaper industry is failing, why many of us fighting the good fight are getting discouraged.
The newspaper industry used to have a monopoly so it didn’t need great stuff, just inoffensive just in the world of corporate journalism so as not to alienate advertisers and readers.
Few newspaper managers realize that content is king now, not advertising.
If I lived in Waco, I would have checked out your column every time it ran, even if I didn’t agree or it made me mad. At least you were brave enough to have an opinion. What you did IS journalism. What your editors did is not, and, if this is any consolation, they probably know it.

The “American” values of independence and self-reliance are, and were, largely a myth. This country was built by cooperative toil, organized and dedicated warriors who helped each other and a government that throughout the 19th Century supported and boosted industry. Sometimes through massive giveaways (think the Railroads who were given millions of acres of land by the Fed Govt). Conservative mythology insists on perpetuating this myth of “self reliance” and so many people in this country, especially in the South, are so poorly educated and ignorant of true American history they believe this shit. That helps explain why seniors demand that the “government keep its hands off my Medicare.” A population that abysmally ignorant is easily manipulated by the Conservative elite that really controls this nation.

I first read it in an interview he did for High Times magazines. He continually referred to himself as “Young Ted” and seemed very proud of having dodged the draft.

Of course, that interview was done in the 70’s at a time when the entire country had come to realize what a mistake the disaster in Viet Nam always was.

In the meantime, Ted’s swung around to the political expedience of supporting our latest foreign policy mistakes and disasters. Apparently, it’s okay for other people’s kids to get shipped off and die, but not for “Young Ted.”

Oh, one more thing: as for musicians that never did drugs? In that same interview, Nugent said that in addition to defecating in his pants for a week, “Young Ted” also did speed for that week so he’d be wired when he showed up for his induction physical.

Your admitting being a “pal” to Ted Nugent, not in the least name-dropping, is one of several reasons I am not unhappy to see you go as editor of TM. I saw you at a journalism forum in Austin not long after you took over. You made it clear that you wanted to mold Texas Monthly into the cookie cutter New York style of magazine. That is largely what you have done. While TM has received some national acclaim, it lost much credibility as a Texas publication. Part of the reason was Paul Burka whoring himself out as a George W. expert among Talkingheaddom. But you, specifically, have spread the curse of celebrity to envelope what was once — for years — was cultural lens of the Lone Star State. Your magazine has become Austincentric, Metrocentric and NewYorkcentric. I hope — if Paul Burka isn’t the new head honcho — that whomever takes over will put the TEXAS back into Texas Monthly. As for the Waco Trib getting rid of Ted Nugent. I feel like the Robinsons are 1-1. The put “In God We Trust” on their banner and fired this idiot who doesn’t know the difference between an editor and an owner. Carlos Sanchez isn’t the new editor. He’s been there for at least 4-5 years, before this moron rock star started writing. Sanchez was an editor for the still Cox publication the Austin American Statesman before he came to Waco. Waco is much worse off for Cox selling the paper. Sanchez? Whatever. He is insignificant.

“So basically,” – I admit that I have, unaccountably, started to speak Nugent – “you didn’t want to get your Michigan ass blown off in Vietnam.” “Correct. I did not want to get my ass blown off in Vietnam.”

And while I don’t agree with everything Ted writes; often enough he gets it correct, IMHO. When Molly Ivins column was published; though it drove me nuts, I respected her right to be published likewise.

But sadly “Six Shooter Junction” has never been a mecca of free speech. Don’t believe that, research Wm. Cowper Brann (The Iconoclast) and what happened to his right to his opinion. So all we have here in Waco is “same song – different verse”.

I do take one exception to Ted’s Teditorial above though. The most basic of our Constitutional Rights is found in the Second Amendment, not the First.

But I suspect that’s not the issue here- the fact is that much like his previous career, he’s not a very good writer-he strings together cliches that he presumes are facts and fails to substantiate his wild-eyed accusations-not unlike another loudmoth from way up North. It had everything to do with a polite request from the Trib’s very conservative owners that he show at least some civility in political discourse and that he show some respect for others, regardless of political viewpoints. Ted told his bosses he would be happy to do so, then turned around and lambasted them behind their very backs on his blog, which where I come from in Texas is the absolute height of cowardice and hypocrisy. This has to do with professionalism in journalism and the lack of it by some. This has to do with duplicity. This has to do with Ted’s being a blowhard but not much of a man.

Ok, true story. Ted, like many c-list acts, has Tulsa as part of his performance tour. He came in early before his concert to sign copies of his then new, “Kill It and Grill It,” book. I’m a liberal, but I have a brother-in-law, who’s a good ol’ boy who’s a hunter (gun and bow) like Ted so I thought maybe he would like an autographed copy.

My girlfriend and I went to Borders and stood in line filled with Ted fans blinking confusedly at all the books that weren’t the Bible or written by Ted or people like Limbaugh. I think a couple even passed out after seeing non-Ted music in the CD section.

Anyway, Ted signed my copy and said, “Enjoy that pardner. There’s a lot of wisdom in there.” Having leafed through it while in line, I literally hurt myself not laughing in his face. Seriously, I had to quickly exit the Borders and then lean against the building while the stitch in my side subsided.

My gf and I went to a local restaurant for me to recover and get a bite while reading things like, “The point of life is to live, and if you’re not living life then you’re not living!” Not an exact quote but close enough.

I gave the book to my brother-in-law, who thanked me profusely and admitted he didn’t really know anything about Ted as he listens to nothing but country music.

I saw him a month later and asked him what he thought of the book. He sighed and said, “James, the recipes look good, but for the rest of it, I thought it was some dumb drug humor that I wasn’t getting until I saw him on a show on ESPN, and he really is that damn dumb!”
