The embattled A&M Board of Regents will meet this week, according to a posting on the Texas A&M System’s Web site. Presidential selection is on the agenda:
The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System will meet Thursday and Friday, Dec. 6-7, in the board meeting room and room 292 of the Memorial Student Center on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.
The board will consider any and all things leading to the selection of the president of Texas A&M University, including possible action to name the finalist(s) for the position.
Despite this language, the likelihood is that the statement may well be precautionary to allow discussion of matters related to presidential selection without any action being taken. There are indications of a rapproachment between the regents and the faculty. Doug Slack, the faculty member who headed the presidential selection committee, will meet with the regents in executive session on Thursday. It appears to me that the regents are moving, albeit belatedly, to heal the breech with the faculty opened by Regents’ Chairman Bill Jones’ hostile letter to the speaker of the Faculty Senate. If this is indeed the case, the matter of presidential selection could be delayed.
