Stick a fork in Van Taylor. He’s done. The Associated Press is reporting, in a story datelined Washington, that Republicans have pulled the plug on his challenge to Chet Edwards in the 17th congressional district. The relevant paragraph:

“Republican officials also appeared to have decided not to use more than $1.5 million in television time initially reserved to advertise against eight-term Democratic Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas. Two television station managers in the Waco area and the Edwards campaign said Tuesday that the NRCC [National Republican Campaign Committee] was not planning to spend the money in Edwards’ race against Republican Van Taylor.”

The same article reported that Republicans are spending money in the 22nd district, Tom DeLay’s old stomping grounds, to help the write-in candidacy of Shelley Sekula-Gibbs against heavily favored Democrat Nick Lampson (and also her simultaneous bid to win a special election to fill DeLay’s unexpired term).
