Most of us in the Capitol press corps know little about the members we watch every day. As it happened, Charlie Howard changed the world. Who knew that (quoting from his bio) “Rep. Howard and his wife, Jo, came to Houston in 1970 from Alabama where they had both worked on the Apollo program, which landed the first man on the moon. Charlie, an electrical engineer, was a member of the team that developed the first broadband data system to handle the massive data transmissions to and from the spacecraft and the NASA facilities.” What a magnificent contribution to the advance of mankind, and of scientific knowledge, Charlie Howard made. I never heard him talk about it, but it was a remarkable achievement. I wonder how many of us would have viewed Charlie differently if we had known his background. I wish him well.
