In the posting I wrote about the House rules debate, I mentioned Yvonne Davis’s amendment to provide criminal penalties under the Open Meetings law for illegal closed committee meetings. Joe Nixon, the chairman of the Civil Practices committee during the 2003 and 2005 sessions, sent the following e-mail shortly after publication:

“In your blog of today, you mention that Civil Practices had an “illegal” meeting. In fact, it did not. The meeting did not even violate the House Rules, let alone the Open Meetings Act. Mr. Earle wrote a letter to that effect when the Ardmore group left with several quorums on the bus.”

Thanks to Mr. Nixon for his correspondence. Accordingly, I have edited the posting to reflect his concerns. I probably should have called it an “allegedly” illegal meeting the first time.
