The latest anti-Obama complaint that is being circulated by e-mail among conservatives is that the new silver dollar drops the national motto, “In God We Trust.” The e-mails call upon recipients to refuse to accept the silver dollar and force it to be removed from circulation. This seemed so nutty to me that I googled “silver dollar in God we trust” and came up with this discussion from the web site snopes.com: Just as the first Presidential U.S. $1 coins began rolling outof the Mint in early 2007, e-mails began to circulate spreading the erroneous assertion that the new dollar coins did not include the phrase “In God We Trust” in their design. In fact, the Presidential dollars neither omitted the phrase “In God We Trust” nor demonstrated a plot to phase God out of America. As specified by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, in order to allow for “larger and more dramatic artwork,” on the coins’ faces, the new Presidential $1 coins incorporate a few design features not found on other current U.S. coins, one of which is that elements typically displayed on either the [head] or the [tail] U.S. coins –the year of minting, the mint mark, the motto from the Great Seal of the United States [E Pluribus Unum], and the current national motto of the United States [In God We Trust], are included as edge-inscribed inscriptions…. Indeed, when I opened my e-mail tonight, this very assertion was contained in an e-mail from an activist Republican on whose mailing list I appear: Please help out…our world is in enough trouble without this too!!!!! U.S.Government to Release New Dollar Coins You guessed it ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ IS GONE!!! If ever there was a reason to boycott something, THIS IS IT!!!! DO NOT ACCEPT THE NEW DOLLAR COINS AS CHANGE Together we can force them out of circulation.. Please send to all on your mailing list!!! I can understand that Republicans do not like Obama’s policies. I’m not crazy about some of them either. But I can’t understand that an entire party has gone conspiracy-crazy. They think he is the devil. This is totally out of control. It is going to hurt Obama and the Democrats in the short run, which includes the 2010 congressional elections, but in the long run it is going to leave Republicans isolated on the nut fringe of American politics.
