From their release today:
“In one State House race after another, center-right Republicans were defeated by far-right extremists, leaving room for Democrats to attract and win independent voters in the fall.”
There are two things wrong with this statement. One is that only two State House Republicans lost, period. “One after another” means Betty Brown and Tommy Merritt. I guess you could say that Brown was defeated by a far-right extremist–that would be herself–due to statements such as her suggestion that Asian people change their names to be more American, but technically she was defeated by her former aide, 26-year-old Lance Gooden. I don’t think Gooden is a right-wing extremist. One of his issues was teacher pay. The other Republican to lose was Tommy Merritt. Merritt was indeed defeated by a right-wing extremist, but from what I’ve heard, he didn’t run a good race. When people at gatherings took issue with things he had been doing, he would say, “If you don’t like what I’m doing, fire me.” They did.
