Rick Perry will undoubtedly get his way in naming the next chancellor of the University of Texas System. Kyle Janek, the executive commissioner of Texas Health and Human Services and a former state senator and lobbyist, appears to be Perry's choice for the job. Will regents question his fitness for a major academic position? They should--he doesn't have any academic credentials--but they probably won't.
Janek was not a particularly distinguished senator. At HHS, his management style has been to surround himself with people who had worked for him over the years and draw the circle tight. Word is that Aggies are chortling about a potential Janek appointment and the contrast with John Sharp. I think Janek is the wrong choice for the UT System, and he will have to prove that he will do more than Perry's bidding.
