The Hutchison campaign sent out this broadside against the governor today for his office’s action in demanding the resignations of two Texas Tech regents for their support of Kay Bailey Hutchison: “The message is clear for every single dedicated public servant in Texas: Either pledge support for Rick Perry or risk losing your job. This latest Perry power grab would make any New York City machine politician jealous. Texans deserve a leader they can trust not to use state government like their own personal political playground. Tuition is skyrocketing but Rick Perry’s sole concern is how he can use Texas’ colleges and universities to raise campaign cash.” The accusation–“The message is clear for every single dedicated public servant in Texas: Either pledge your support for Rick Perry or risk losing your job”–is entirely correct. But if the Hutchison campaign thinks that this will embarrass Perry, they’re dead wrong. Far from being embarrassed by the charges, Perry revels in them. Incidents like the resignations of the regents work to enhance his power and send a message to every appointee: You work for me.
