A Rose by Any Other Name

In this case, the Rose is named Charlie. I was invited on his PBS show today to talk about Karl Rove's departure. We taped it this afternoon and it will air tonight, supposedly at 11:30 p.m. in Austin. My fellow panelists were Mark Halperin, editor-at-large for Time and ABC News political analyst; Jay Carney, Washington bureau chief for Time; and Jim VandeHei, formerly of the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post who now writes for The Politico. None of us was buying the "he wants to spend more time with his family" routine. It was the best panel I have ever been on. Nothing earth-shattering came out of it, but those guys were really smart. I had the last word, which is always satisfying.

Pac-Sat, the studio near the Capitol where I went for the taping, was doing a land office business in Rove commentary. Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News (and the author of two books on Rove) was live on Hardball before my taping, and Slater's co-author, James C. Moore, was chatting it up and waiting for his turn at a different studio.

I never watch myself on TV, but I'm going to watch this one, just to see if it was as good as I thought it was while we were doing it.
