More than 4,800 students attend Abilene Christian University, a well-regarded private school affiliated with the Churches of Christ. ACU’s pre-med and journalism programs, which attract top students, are just two of the 61 majors available to undergraduates. ACU is committed to faith-based education. The university’s newest master of science degree trains students to integrate their spiritual beliefs and their social work practice. ACU students’ daily chapel requirement recently was revamped to include more variety, such as opportunities for small-group worship, faith-based conversations, and inspirational guest speakers. Most of ACU’s students volunteer regularly, often in the greater Abilene community. Spring break programs offer intensive mission opportunities as well. The 208-acre campus is about a three-hour drive from the Metroplex, but ACU students often find their fun closer to home. First settled as a railroad outpost, Abilene has become a true college town, with three universities and six other schools of higher education. And while older students often live in Abilene, first- and second-year students stay on campus in single-gender dormitories. Many take part in campus social clubs, which function much like fraternities and sororities. Popular annual events include Sing Song, at which costumed students perform themed a cappella medleys, often with a satirical bent. ACU has an impressive track team, and its women’s soccer team recently joined the Lone Star Conference.
