Houston Baptist University’s unique double major program attracts dedicated students eager to explore multiple fields of study. While students’ spiritual development is also a top priority at HBU, the university’s religious focus remains rather low key. Established in 1960, HBU offers more than 40 majors and pre-professional programs. Among these, the university’s nursing program receives high marks. Because of HBU’s proximity to downtown Houston, students benefit from a wealth of internship and mentoring opportunities with nearby businesses and institutions, such as the Texas Medical Center.
Students have much to choose from, both on and off campus. Beginning in the fall of 2008, students of all classifications will be able to select on-campus living options from three residence colleges, two of which are single-gender, and a new facility that will offer apartments and suite-style housing in six floors of community living open to men and women. Upperclassmen may also choose to room in campus apartments.
HBU offers more than 45 student organizations, including honor societies, service organizations, and fellowship groups. The basketball and baseball programs attract significant numbers of student fans. HBU has gone from seven sports in 2006-07 to 14 in 2007-08 as the university marks the first year of its transition to NCAA Division I status.
Located in southwest Houston, the 100-acre HBU campus is within five miles of the Galleria shopping center and is close to many other diversions as well, including top-notch museums, comedy clubs, and restaurants. Equally appealing is HBU’s new Cultural Arts Center, which brings a chapel, theater, and auditorium, as well as museum exhibition space, to the campus.
