More than 7,000 undergraduates attend Lamar University, a member of the Texas State University System. Lamar offers more than 45 majors and pre-professional programs. Graduates of the medical, dental, and nursing programs do especially well on their licensing exams, and various research centers and laboratories provide hands-on opportunities. In the past two years, the university has added innovative degree programs in American Sign Language and construction management.
Recent campus improvements include a 129,500-squarefoot recreational sports center that houses an elevated jogging track; courts for basketball, roller hockey, and other sports; a 40-foot climbing wall; and a health food and juice bar. Planned expansions to the music and engineering buildings are in the works, and the university hopes to add a biology building in the near future.
The 270-acre Beaumont campus is on the Gulf of Mexico, offering a subtropical climate year-round. The campus houses the Dishman Art Museum, which serves as both a teaching facility and an exhibition space. Its impressive permanent collection includes works by English portrait artist Sir Thomas Lawrence, among others. The university cosponsors the Spindletop Film Festival, a small but wellregarded annual event. Students can also take advantage of Beaumont’s Crockett Street Entertainment District (Bobby McGee’s is a popular club) and the shuttles that run between campus and this lively downtown area.
