Points of Distinction

Once the site of a World War II army hospital, LeTourneau University’s Longview campus spreads out over 162 acres of piney woods. Its first students were GIs returning from the war; today its enrollment exceeds 3,600 undergraduates. Approximately 1,200 students take classes at the Longview campus, while satellite centers in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Tyler serve the rest. An interdenominational university, LeTourneau has a biblical worldview that informs its more than 60 academic programs. The university is known for programs in aeronautical science, engineering, teacher education, and business. But LeTourneau also prides itself on its nontraditional focus, which encompasses academics (a digital writing degree program, for example) as well as student life (a university president who isn’t afraid to go skydiving with his undergraduates).

All of LeTourneau’s residence halls are either recently renovated or newly built. Outside of the classroom, students engage in service work and intramural sports. The university’s 13 varsity sports teams compete at the NCAA Division III level. Many students spend weekends on campus, venturing into Longview for seasonal symphony concerts or to eat at local barbecue restaurants and the Butcher Shop, which has weekly burger specials. Dallas is a two-hour drive, attracting those who seek more cosmopolitan diversions.
