Established in the 1920s as Wichita Falls Junior College, Midwestern State University has blossomed into a selective four-year liberal arts school with more than 6,000 students. Red brick buildings and gently sculpted archways give the campus a classic collegiate feel. Five residence halls and two apartment complexes house on-campus students. After completing a core curriculum, MSU students choose from 60 majors. Those who specialize in mechanical engineering have access to the school’s robotics laboratory, and the radiological program earns high marks from professionals in the field.
MSU’s eclectic list of more than 100 student organizations has something for everyone, from a society for vegetarians to radiology, jazz, and chess clubs. When they’re not hanging out on the steps of neighboring Pierce and Killingsworth dorms, students often head into town to hear live music at the Iron Horse Pub or sing karaoke at Graham Central Station. MSU students also enjoy the annual Wichita Falls Fallsfest, a three-day celebration with arts and crafts, concerts, and food. In December the campus hosts more than 500,000 visitors, many from surrounding neighborhoods, who come to see the spectacular Fantasy of Light holiday display. The Wichita Falls Museum of Art, on the MSU campus, attracts visitors year-round.
