Points of Distinction

Situated in the West Texas ranching community of San Angelo, Angelo State University features a mix of degree programs that reflects the city’s agricultural roots and acknowledges its fast-growing medical and science communities. ASU undergraduates choose from 39 academic programs, and the university’s recent affiliation with the Texas Tech University System is opening up new post-baccalaureate opportunities for ASU graduates. ASU’s Management, Instruction, and Research (MIR) Center, located just north of San Angelo, is an impressive 6,000-acre lakefront teaching facility for agriculture majors. Students can also take advantage of educational opportunities and enjoy recreational downtime at the ASU Lake House on nearby Lake Nasworthy.

ASU’s science programs are equally impressive. ASU was the first university in Texas to offer a degree in computer science, and the school boasts the State of Texas Data Center, where a cutting-edge computer system provides backup for many of the state’s electronic records. Physics Today considers the university’s physics program to be among the best in the nation.

The university is committed to retaining its students, offering annual scholarships to approximately one in six of its undergraduates through the Carr Academic Scholarship Foundation. Students reside on campus in one of seven residence halls, two of which feature apartmentstyle living. Centennial Village, due to open in fall 2008, will have a contemporary mix of traditional units and apartments, easing the school’s housing crunch. ASU draws students from most counties in Texas (212 of 254) as well as from 38 states and 24 countries.
