Change is afoot at Paul Quinn College, which prides itself on being the oldest African American liberal arts college in Texas. The administration recently announced a temporary accreditation probation and is using this challenge as an opportunity to improve the Paul Quinn College experience in every way. A business casual dress code is in effect Monday through Thursday to prepare students for the realities of the corporate world after graduation. The college’s academic program, anchored by a core curriculum, has been strategically reduced to 11 majors, among which are business, education, biology, and legal studies (which replaces the criminal justice degree). Paul Quinn College’s science program was recently in the news when one of its professors made a significant genetic research discovery.
Originally founded in Austin as a trade school, Paul Quinn eventually relocated to its current site in Dallas, where it considers itself the “southern gateway” to the city. Attractions such as the Dallas Museum of Art and the Deep Ellum entertainment district are within eight miles of the pastoral 130-acre campus, where rolling hills and wooded areas provide a respite from the urban activity that surrounds the college. Students participate in various extracurricular groups, including the esteemed gospel choir. The men’s track team won the 2006–07 Red River championship title, and its athletes compete in the NAIA, as do the volleyball, basketball, baseball, and women’s track teams.
