From its attractive grounds to its highly selective admissions process, Rice University is considered one of the “new” Ivies (although technically it’s not an Ivy League school). Rice maintains an outstanding reputation for its rigorous academics, nurturing residential college system, and ability to produce educated, wellrounded graduates. The 300-acre campus, with its parklike atmosphere and neo-Byzantine architecture, sits in the heart of downtown Houston. Thanks to the relatively new “Passport to Houston” program, which allows all Rice students free and unlimited transport on the city’s bus and light rail system, the shopping, theater, and entertainment districts are easily accessible. Home to numerous Fortune 500 companies, Houston also offers students valuable internship opportunities.
Rice enrolls just under 3,000 undergraduates, most of whom reside in one of nine coed residential colleges. Based on similar models at Oxford and Cambridge, the residential college system encourages students to develop close relationships as they live, dine, and interact with one another and faculty advisors. Each residential college also sponsors its own intramural team. More-frivolous competition exists off the field in the form of legendary practical jokes, or “jacks,” which colleges like to play on one another.
A generous endowment helps Rice maintain an enviable quality of life inside and outside the classroom. Students choose from more than 50 majors; in particular, Rice’s architecture, engineering, and computer science programs earn high praise. As part of the president’s master plan, the university will increase its enrollment to 3,800 undergraduates by 2015. Campus expansion is planned to accommodate such changes, with the construction of two new residential colleges currently under way.
