San Antonio’s oldest Catholic university is also one of its most attractive. The 135-acre campus sits northwest of the city’s historic downtown and is anchored by the stately St. Louis Hall. Eleven apartment- style residence halls (both single-gender and coeducational) are surrounded by green space. St. Mary’s has more than 45 undergraduate degree and pre-professional programs, and the biological sciences and nursing programs are especially popular. A new part-time evening law program caters to nontraditional students.
Given the school’s Catholic heritage, students often balance their academics with community service. The 21st Century Leadership Center, which offers courses in various forms of leadership (political, presidential, etc.), sponsors a number of community-based initiatives. Twice a year, St. Mary’s participates in Continuing the Heritage, a day of service that partners university students with local nonprofits and other community organizations.
Students also spend their downtime playing on or cheering for the school’s varsity sports teams, which compete at the NCAA Division II level and in the Heartland Conference. Both the men’s and the women’s golf teams have been nationally recognized on a regular basis. Campus shuttles ferry students to well-known sites like the River Walk, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and other downtown hangouts.
