This small liberal arts university in the Texas Hill Country town of Kerrville is poised for expansion, hoping to boost enrollment and increase its academic and extracurricular offerings over the next few years. Construction has begun on the long-awaited Mountaineer Center, a state-ofthe- art facility that will house Schreiner’s sports programs and function as a campus recreation and fitness center. It is expected to open in 2009.
Schreiner University has come a long way from its roots as a military prep school. Today nearly 1,000 undergraduates take classes on the bucolic 170-acre campus, which is within an hour or two of both San Antonio and Austin. Students live in one of six residence halls and apartment complexes, and a community bike-share program allows them to zip to class and elsewhere on campus. Schreiner’s education and business programs are especially strong among its 26 majors. More than 40 student organizations (Campus Ministry is popular) and eight NCAA Division III sports teams provide extracurricular activities.
Given its enviable location in the Texas Hill Country, Schreiner offers students many opportunities to get back to nature. The Schreiner Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP) hosts camping, climbing, and hiking trips to Enchanted Rock and Big Bend National Park. Kerrville’s downtown square is within walking distance of the university. Students often head to the well-known Hill Country Cafe, which brews good coffee and serves tasty breakfast and lunch items.
