Keene’s striking petrified wood Mizpah Gate welcomes students to Southwestern Adventist University, where approximately 900 undergraduates study the university’s faith-based curriculum. SAU offers students many opportunities to nourish their spirituality. Small Bible study groups provide intimate faith exploration, while the university’s S.O.U.L. Drama Team appeals to extroverts. Southwestern Adventist’s academic menu lists 37 bachelor’s degrees and 20 pre-professional programs. The university’s nursing program continues to expand and attract top candidates. Students majoring in communications receive lots of hands-on training at the university’s FM radio station, recording studio, digital audio production facility, and cable television station.
Physical nourishment is as important as spiritual sustenance, and Southwestern Adventist has the largest vegetarian buffet in the state. (The campus is also surrounded by at least five Taco Bells.) Southwestern Adventist students often belong to one or more of the school’s 17 clubs and organizations. They also congregate at the student center to watch television, play pool, and generally relax outside the classroom. Keene is a small, rural town that values education and is close to a number of state parks and recreational lake areas. Fort Worth’s cultural district is 35 minutes from campus, and Dallas hot spots are less than an hour away.
