This small liberal arts college enjoys a big reputation. Nearly 1,400 students attend Austin College, which is known for cultivating smart, well-rounded, critical thinkers. Students choose from more than 30 areas of study, and the school’s business program is especially popular. (A new lecture series hosted by the nation’s top executives was initiated in 2007.) Approximately 70 percent of Austin College’s students go abroad at some point during their academic careers, and the four-week January Term allows them to pursue courses outside their majors and off the beaten path. Recent offerings included a cartooning and illustration course, an immersion course in London theater, and a silversmithing class in New Mexico.
The majority of students spend most of their college career living on campus in one of five residence halls (three are single-gender halls, two are coed). While some students might find the on-campus living arrangement stifling, many embrace the opportunity to nurture lifelong friendships.
The school’s 70-acre campus lies 60 miles north of Dallas in Sherman, often touted for its livability and laid-back attitude. Sherman is home to a number of top companies (Folgers Coffee Company is one of them), as well as a lively arts community.
