Known for its rigorous academics and strong Christian values, Baylor University is the only private university in the Big XII athletic conference. Approximately 12,000 undergraduates attend Baylor, where they choose from more than 140 majors and pre-health programs. The university’s pre-med program is well regarded; its health care and nursing departments also attract top students.
Baylor’s serene campus occupies 735 acres on the shores of the Brazos River in Waco, which is also the site of the Dr Pepper Museum. The beloved Southern soda is part of Baylor’s culture, too—students and faculty alike enjoy free Dr Pepper floats during a weekly Dr Pepper Hour.
The newest addition to the campus is Brooks Village, a semi-coeducational residential college modeled on similar residences at Oxford and Yale. Designed to encourage a more collegial atmosphere, Brooks Village is part of the university’s strategic master plan to improve the quality of student life. By the year 2012, Baylor plans to have at least half of its undergraduate students living on campus. In the meantime, students rely on biweekly chapel attendance and participation in more than 300 student organizations to provide spiritual and recreational sustenance.
