Texas Woman’s University has been enrolling both men and women since 1972, although its name suggests otherwise. Approximately 6,600 undergraduates choose from 36 majors. The health sciences are popular, and a proposed Institute of Health Sciences will open in Dallas in 2010. TWU’s nursing program also attracts many students and receives high praise in the field. The TWU Honors Scholars Program is one of the 10 most selective honors programs in the state. Approximately 220 students participate, living communally in honors housing and spending semesters abroad in countries like Germany, Greece, and Switzerland.
TWU is also known as a commuter school, attracting nontraditional students who live off campus but take classes at the main Denton campus or at satellite branches in Houston and Dallas. Undergraduates who have yet to turn 21 years old live in campus residence halls. These highrise structures mix with traditional buildings like Old Main and the Little Chapel-in-the-Woods, which is near the lush botanical gardens.
More than 100 organizations provide extracurricular opportunities, and the university fields five athletic teams that compete at the NCAA Division II level. TWU’s talented gymnastics team is often in the news.
TWU’s proximity to Denton’s courthouse square often brings students downtown to places like Jupiter House, a 24-hour coffeehouse. Denton’s annual Arts and Jazz Festival is a student favorite, too, and nearby Lake Lewisville serves as yet another recreational option.
