Points of Distinction

Founded in 1845 as a teacher-training institute for women only, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has evolved into a selective coeducational school that’s known for its nursing, business, and education programs. New academic options for 2008 include a London semester, during which students attend classes and live in the heart of the city while taking field trips to other European countries, including a nine-day visit to Scotland.

More than 2,500 undergraduates attend classes on the 170-acre Belton campus. Seven single-gender residence halls and three modern apartment complexes provide oncampus housing. The university doesn’t support a Greek system, but it does have more than 40 student organizations— everything from the Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor Pageant to Puff Football. A member of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the university encourages faith-based activities and offers numerous student ministry groups and service opportunities. Student athletes compete on 12 teams at the NCAA Division III level and in the American Southwest Conference.

Construction on the Meyer Christian Studies Center is in progress. The three-story complex will house the College of Christian Studies and a chapel with vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows that look out on the woods surrounding the campus. The location is appropriately serene, which describes much of Belton itself. Lake Belton’s pathways and caves offer nearby recreation, and neighboring Temple has a few student-oriented clubs and restaurants. Occasionally UMHB students will even make the hour’s drive south to Austin.
