The second-largest school in the University of Texas System, the University of Texas at Arlington boasts several singular academic programs as well as an ongoing commitment to research. Its School of Architecture is highly regarded, and its studio arts program combines the study of traditional art forms like painting and sculpture with work in glass and neon. UTA offers 90 undergraduate degrees that involve both classroom study and research opportunities. For instance, the School of Nursing recently received a $500,000 grant to create the Genomics Translational Research Laboratory to study genomic-related health issues.
More than 19,000 undergraduates attend UTA, and the 420-acre Arlington campus includes more than 100 buildings. The university’s on-campus housing facilities accommodate approximately 4,400 undergraduates. Kalpana Chawla Hall, named for the UTA alumna who died on the Space Shuttle Columbia, is the newest residence hall and the school’s first living-learning program. Construction on the new Maverick Activities Center added 80,000 square feet of recreational space to the original facility, and a second-phase expansion will open in 2008.
The university sponsors more than 300 campus organizations, including academic clubs, professional societies, service groups, and special-interest groups. Twelve men’s and women’s athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level, and the men’s wheelchair basketball team has won seven national championships since 1989. UTA students frequently study at Arlington’s Coffee Haus, which offers the unbeatable combination of WiFi and tasty desserts. Playing pool at Caves Lounge is another popular pastime. Occasional trips into Fort Worth and Dallas are also common.
