Points of Distinction

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College enjoy a mutually beneficial partnership. Together these institutions, one a four-year university and the other a two-year college, provide 13 bachelor’s degrees and associate and master’s degrees in addition to certificate programs in various occupations. UTB/TSC’s music education program draws many accomplished students, and the nursing and allied health programs are gaining in popularity and prestige.

Expansion is the administration’s top priority. Enrollment is now at nearly 15,000 undergraduates, and the university hopes to hit 20,000 by 2010. Major construction projects are in progress or in the planning stages on the 380-acre Brownsville campus. The Recreation, Education, and Kinesiology Center is currently under way, with a projected completion date of fall 2008. Construction of the East Library also has begun. A new music education building is planned, and construction on the Science and Technology Center will begin in 2008.

The university’s performing arts calendar reflects the region’s Latin heritage, programming artists like José Feliciano and Arturo Sandoval. More than 60 student clubs and organizations also provide extracurricular opportunities; recently the university’s chess team gave the University of Texas at Dallas’s top-ranked team a run for its money. Six men’s and women’s varsity athletic teams, including the new men’s soccer team, compete in the NAIA and the Red River Athletic Conference.

Taking advantage of the region’s semitropical climate, students head to nearby South Padre Island yearround, and they also avail themselves of the amazing cultural opportunities just across the U.S.-Mexico border, which is only one block from the Brownsville campus.
