Points of Distinction

Originally founded as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest in Richardson’s Telecom Corridor, the University of Texas at Dallas is known for its innovative and selective research, technology, and science programs. UTD also has a chess team that consistently earns the top spot among the nation’s collegiate programs. And when you consider that one of the school’s recent summer courses was “Video Narrative and Robot Culture,” you begin to understand the kind of brainy and technologically hip student who might be attracted to UTD. More than 14,000 students attend the university, where they choose from 41 undergraduate and 78 graduate fields of study, including a new degree program in computer engineering. Advanced high school students can apply to Collegium V, UTD’s honors and enrichment program.

UTD’s campus is expanding, with plans in the works for a new classroom facility and residential housing unit, as well as other projects. Some students complain that the university’s reputation as a commuter school negatively affects campus life, but others argue that students simply need to get involved to get the most out of UTD. From Greek life to academic groups to club sports, UTD has nearly 300 student organizations. As of the fall of 2007, all students are eligible to receive a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) pass, which grants access to the entire DART system. Additionally, a UTD shuttle system is in the works to ease campus parking as well as offer greater access to downtown Dallas’s cultural hot spots.
