Set against the stunning natural backdrop of the Franklin Mountains, the University of Texas at El Paso occupies 366 acres. Its unusual tiered architecture was inspired by Bhutanese monasteries featured in a National Geographic article published in the early 1900s. The university’s tradition as a school for mining engineers is still in evidence today: UTEP’s engineering programs are among the most respected in the nation. In fact, upgrades to and new construction of the school’s engineering and science facilities are a top priority for the current administration.
The majority of UTEP’s approximately 16,500 undergraduates are first-generation college students. The university is also known for having one of the highest enrollments of Hispanic students in the country. Six colleges offer 81 bachelor’s degrees. University College is a new multidisciplinary program that allows students to combine credits from various disciplines into a single degree.
The Union Coffee House is a busy campus hangout, especially on Thursday nights for live music and karaoke, and more than 200 student organizations offer plenty of other extracurricular involvement. UTEP’s athletic teams, including its impressive track and field and basketball teams, compete at the NCAA Division 1-A level. (Construction of a state-of-the-art basketball facility is in progress.) El Paso’s Cincinnati Street attracts students after hours to places like Crawdaddy’s, which is known for its Cajun food and drink specials. The restaurants and nightclubs of Juárez, El Paso’s sister city in Mexico, are just a quick trolley ride from downtown.
