It’s an exciting time for this Central Texas university. With overall enrollment at a record high of more than 1,700 total students, Concordia University bids good-bye to its downtown Austin campus and prepares to relocate to the Austin Hill Country Reserve by fall 2008. Concordia’s new 385-acre campus is more than 10 times the size of its current location and includes a 250-acre nature preserve with wetlands, caves, and a habitat area. Students enrolled in Concordia’s urban environmental studies program will surely benefit from numerous hands-on opportunities to learn about wildlife habitat and protection.
The move will benefit all of Concordia’s students, of course, with a physical expansion that will add more student housing, a gym, and a music and performing arts center. Affiliated with the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, Concordia University prides itself on cultivating Christian leaders. The addition of a chapel to the new campus will no doubt strengthen this aim. Undergraduates, who currently choose from 22 majors, will also appreciate increased classroom space and parking. The school’s sports teams, which compete at the NCAA Division III level, will have access to new athletic fields and a field house.
