This university’s mission to unite the diverse heritages of North and South America is reflected in its name. UTPA enrolls the highest number and percentage of Hispanics of all the state’s public universities. Programs like the interdisciplinary Mexican American heritage major in the College of Arts and Humanities clearly demonstrate UTPA’s commitment to cultural diversity. Of the university’s 56 majors, the education, nursing, and criminal justice programs attract the majority of its 15,000-plus undergraduates. The university’s research centers, like the Coastal Studies Laboratory, tend to focus on subjects of relevance to the surrounding Gulf Coast region.
UTPA’s campus life is fairly active, with 12 men’s and women’s NCAA Division I athletic teams and more than 100 student organizations covering a wide range of interests, from the Biology Club to the Baptist Student Ministry to the Chuck Norris Fan Club. The new Wellness and Recreation Sports Complex opened in 2007, providing such amenities as a climbing wall and cardiovascular studios. Outdoor facilities include beach volleyball courts.
After hours, students often frequent the many Mexican restaurants along University Drive. Fiesta Edinburg, an annual heritage celebration, hosts concerts, a parade, and a rodeo for students, locals, and visitors. The campus is less than 20 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, and South Padre Island’s sand and surf are within 75 miles.
