A member of the University of Texas System, the University of Texas of the Permian Basin has seen tremendous growth in recent years. UTPB offers 36 undergraduate majors and is known for its strong programs in business, the visual arts, and kinesiology. The distinctive John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute offers seminars and training and supports research about public leadership throughout the state. The university sponsors a tuition rebate program that rewards students’ successful academic progress. Recently the social work program received full accreditation, which will allow graduates to become licensed and address the growing demand in West Texas for practitioners in this field.
The 564-acre campus continues to expand. A newly renovated gymnasium is now available to UTPB’s nearly 3,000 undergraduates, and an addition to the student union has been proposed. Ground is about to be broken for the Wagner-Noël Performing Arts Center, located midway between Midland and UTPB. It will allow for expansion of the music program and provide recital space and a 2,000-seat performance hall. A new science complex is also in the planning stages.
Students participate in more than 30 organizations and clubs on campus. UTPB’s 13 men’s and women’s athletic teams, while fairly new to the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference, have shown promise. Neighboring Odessa is one of the university’s biggest fans, supporting UTPB students by offering internships and providing studentoriented community events. Listening to live music at Odessa’s Graham Central Station is a favorite undergraduate pastime.
