The University of Texas at San Antonio is actually three campuses in one. The Downtown Campus houses the Colleges of Architecture and Public Policy. The Institute of Texan Cultures, which has been designated the state’s center for multicultural education, is also in the city center. Most of the school’s 25,000 undergraduates, however, take classes at the 1604 Campus, which includes 600 acres north of the downtown area. Three housing complexes accommodate approximately 3,000 students, while the remaining undergraduates live in off-campus apartments or commute from home.
UTSA has 63 bachelor’s degrees, with business and engineering being the most popular. The university is also known for its strong liberal arts program. UTSA plans to expand its graduate programs to cultivate its reputation as a research institution. Expansion is visible on the main campus as well. A $45.7 million student union renovation project will be completed by late 2008. A recent addition to the Recreation and Wellness Center has increased square footage and upgraded amenities. It now boasts a lounge with a smoothie bar and a lazy river.
A lively Greek system exists at UTSA despite its commuter profile. Student organizations include special-interest and political clubs as well as academic and professional organizations. Sixteen men’s and women’s athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southland Conference. Students recently approved a fee increase to fund a proposed football team and upgrade existing sports facilities, but the football issue remains a topic of heated debate among undergraduates. In San Antonio students like to hear live music at the Broadway Bar. They also head to Hills and Dales Ice House, a biker bar across from campus.
