Students at the University of Texas at Tyler enjoy a beautiful parklike campus with Harvey Lake at its center. More than 800 students live on the grounds in three residence facilities. Ornelas Hall, which houses mostly freshmen, is conveniently adjacent to the new Patriot Center fitness and recreation facility.
More than 4,500 undergraduates attend UT-Tyler, where nursing, education, and management are the top three of the university’s 36 bachelor’s programs. The newest undergraduate major is in the fast-growing field of construction management, and the university plans to offer its first doctoral programs within the next few years.
The Greek system became a part of student life in 2006 and represents a fraction of UT-Tyler’s 80 student organizations. The Criminal Justice Student Association, the Live Free or Die Society, and the Gaming Guild are just a few of the other groups available. Student athletes play on 13 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference.
The newly expanded University Center houses a sports bar and multiple food outlets in its three-story addition, providing more on-campus hangouts. In Tyler, the Down Under Pub and Grub is a student favorite. Some students also take advantage of department-sponsored field trips to Dallas and Fort Worth museums and other cultural spots.
