Established in 1898 by the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Dallas Baptist University offers a “Christ-centered education” to more than 5,000 students. Colonial-style buildings dot the sprawling 300-acre campus, which overlooks Mountain Creek Lake in southwest Dallas. Don’t be fooled by the serene campus setting, however. Downtown Dallas is only 13 miles away, and Fort Worth is an easy drive as well.
But DBU students find much to keep them on campus. The student center’s Loft is a popular hangout, especially during monthly Dr Pepper Breaks. Participation in student organizations is high, with offerings as varied as Christians in the Visual Arts, the Fishing Club, and the Korean Student Association. Freshmen are required to fulfill six hours of community service each month, but many DBU students pursue service-oriented opportunities throughout their college careers. Programs like Encounter Ministries, which encourages “passionate discipleship,” allow students to integrate service, spirituality, and friendship.
The DBU curriculum is defined by rigorous academic inquiry informed by faith. It is not uncommon, for instance, for business students to consider how their spirituality might affect corporate strategy. Undergraduates choose from 59 majors and can earn a degree in fields from the music business to Christian studies.
